A classical mythological scene by Domenichino, depicting Apollo and Neptune consulting with King Laomedon on the construction of Troy.
This work by Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, depicts a scene from Greek mythology. Apollo and Neptune, disguised as mortals, consult with King Laomedon regarding the construction of the walls of Troy. The composition reflects the artist's adherence to the principles of the Bolognese school, prioritising clarity, order, and a measured approach to narrative.
Domenichino was a student of Annibale Carracci, and his work often displays a similar interest in the integration of figures within a natural setting. The three figures occupy the foreground, their gestures directing the viewer's attention toward the architectural plans they hold and the distant city walls. The treatment of the trees and the atmospheric perspective in the background demonstrates the artist's skill in creating a sense of depth without overwhelming the primary subject.
Originally part of a larger decorative scheme for the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, this fresco cycle was commissioned to illustrate themes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical precision and classical drapery, consistent with the aesthetic values of the early seventeenth-century Roman Baroque. The palette remains relatively muted, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the deities and the king. The decorative border framing the scene is characteristic of the period's approach to integrating mural painting with interior architecture. This piece offers a view into the way classical narratives were interpreted and visualised for private aristocratic collections during the Baroque era.
