A refined study by Pieter Isaacsz. depicting the classical legend of the painter Apelles at work on a portrait of Campaspe.
This drawing depicts the classical narrative of the Greek painter Apelles, who was commissioned by Alexander the Great to paint his mistress, Campaspe. As the story goes, Apelles fell in love with his subject while working, leading Alexander to gift the woman to the artist. Pieter Isaacsz. captures this moment within a studio setting, where the painter sits before an easel, brush in hand, observing his model. The composition is structured around the interaction between the artist, the ruler, and the muse, set against an architectural backdrop typical of the period.
Isaacsz. employs a delicate application of ink and wash to define the figures and the surrounding space. The use of grey and muted tones provides a sense of volume to the forms, while the watercolour accents bring a subtle warmth to the scene. The artist, born in Denmark but active in the Netherlands, was a significant figure in the transition from late Mannerist styles to the more naturalistic approaches of the early seventeenth century. His work often reflects the influence of his training under Hans von Aachen, particularly in the treatment of the human figure and the theatrical staging of historical subjects.
The drawing demonstrates a high level of technical control, with fine lines establishing the contours of the figures and the architectural details. The presence of a putto near the easel adds a mythological layer to the scene, reinforcing the theme of artistic inspiration. The work provides a window into the contemporary understanding of the artist's role in society, framing the act of painting as a noble and intellectual pursuit. Through this study, Isaacsz. explores the relationship between the creator and the subject, a recurring theme in European art history.
