A formal nineteenth-century portrait of the Dutch lieutenant-general Baron van Omphal, painted by Herman Antonie de Bloeme in 1842.
This portrait depicts Antonie Frederick Jan Floris Jacob, Baron van Omphal (1788-1863), a Dutch lieutenant-general. Painted by Herman Antonie de Bloeme in 1842, the work captures the subject in a formal, bust-length composition. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the sitter's features and the subtle textures of his attire. The Baron is dressed in a dark coat, which provides a stark contrast to the crisp white shirt and cravat.
De Bloeme, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, was known for his ability to render the likeness of the Dutch elite. This portrait is characteristic of the period's approach to military and aristocratic representation, where the focus remains on the individual's status and character. The inclusion of the military decorations on the Baron's lapel serves as a visual indicator of his rank and service. The lighting is directed to illuminate the face, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject's expression, while the background remains dark and indistinct. This technique creates a sense of depth and focus, typical of the portraiture traditions of the time. The brushwork is precise and controlled, reflecting the artist's technical proficiency. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it forms part of the historical record of Dutch military figures. The work provides a clear view of the fashion and social markers of the mid-nineteenth century in the Netherlands.
