A classic Impressionist study by Claude Monet, capturing the soft morning light over the Mediterranean coast at Antibes in 1888.
Claude Monet painted this view of Antibes during his stay on the French Riviera in the spring of 1888. The work captures the specific light of the Mediterranean coast, focusing on the interplay between the foliage of the foreground trees and the distant town of Antibes across the water. Monet was preoccupied with the atmospheric conditions of the region, often returning to the same subject at different times of day to record shifts in colour and illumination.
The composition is anchored by a large tree on the right, its branches rendered with short, broken brushstrokes that suggest the movement of leaves in the breeze. The palette consists of soft blues, pale yellows, and muted pinks, reflecting the early morning light. The town in the background appears as a hazy silhouette, integrated into the horizon through a delicate application of paint. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the scene as a unified optical experience rather than a collection of distinct objects.
Monet's technique here demonstrates his mature Impressionist style. He avoids hard outlines, preferring to define form through colour relationships and the density of his marks. The water is depicted with horizontal strokes of blue and green, contrasting with the more varied, multi-directional marks used for the tree canopy. By prioritising the subjective experience of light, Monet moves away from traditional topographical representation. This painting is one of several versions he produced of the Antibes coastline, each exploring the unique qualities of the southern French light. The work remains a clear example of his focus on seriality and the observation of nature under changing conditions.
