This work by Antonello da Messina depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin Mary. Antonello is recognised for his role in introducing oil painting techniques from Northern Europe to the Italian peninsula. His mastery of light and shadow, combined with a precise application of oil glazes, allows for a level of detail that was revolutionary for the period.
The composition is structured around a central column, which serves to divide the space between the divine messenger and the recipient. The Virgin Mary is shown in a state of quiet contemplation, her posture modest and her expression serene. The angel, positioned to the left, gestures with a hand raised in greeting. Despite the significant loss of paint across the surface, the remaining areas reveal the artist's ability to render textures, from the heavy folds of the drapery to the subtle play of light on the architectural elements.
Antonello da Messina spent time in Venice, and his work shows a synthesis of Italian structural clarity and the meticulous observation of nature found in Flemish art. The interior setting is rendered with a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the domestic space where this miraculous event occurs. Antonello Da Messina
His early St Jerome in His Study (c.1456, 46 x 36 cm, National Gallery, London) shows the synthesis already complete: Flemish precision in the still-life objects and tiled floors, combined with a system of perspective more rigorous than the Netherlandish masters ever attempted. It is a small picture that feels entirely worked out.
The decisive episode came in 1475-76, when he visited Venice and painted the San Cassiano Altarpiece for the church of San Cassiano. The altarpiece was dismembered in the 17th century; only fragments survive in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum. His contact with Giovanni Bellini during this visit generated one of the great productive arguments in art history: scholars still dispute who influenced whom. Either way, Venetian painting was different afterwards.
He returned to Messina and died there in 1479. His late Virgin Annunciate (c.1475, 34.5 x 44.5 cm, Galleria Nazionale, Palermo), showing the Madonna without the angel Gabriel, demonstrates how far he had travelled from his sources: the geometric stillness and internal luminosity are entirely his own.
