This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts the actress and singer Ann Maria Tree (1801-1862). Turner, a prolific engraver, was known for his technical mastery of the mezzotint process, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone and soft, atmospheric lighting. This portrait captures the subject in the fashion of the early nineteenth century, featuring the high-waisted silhouette and elaborate hair styling typical of the Regency period.
Ann Maria Tree gained fame for her performances at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, most notably as Clari in the opera 'Clari, or the Maid of Milan', which introduced the song 'Home! Sweet Home!'.
