A classical depiction of the lovers Angelica and Medoro from Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, rendered in the soft, painterly style of Jacques Blanchard.
Jacques Blanchard, often referred to as the French Titian, produced this work during his formative years in Italy. The painting depicts a scene from Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem, Orlando Furioso. In this episode, the princess Angelica and the soldier Medoro carve their names into the bark of a tree, a gesture signifying their mutual devotion.
Blanchard employs a soft, painterly technique that reflects the influence of Venetian masters. The composition focuses on the reclining figure of Angelica, whose back is turned towards the viewer, creating a sense of intimacy and vulnerability. Medoro, positioned beside her, reaches towards the tree trunk to complete their inscription. The lighting is gentle, casting subtle shadows that define the musculature and form of the figures against the darkened, wooded background.
This piece demonstrates Blanchard's interest in classical themes and his ability to render human emotion through posture and gesture. The figures are integrated into a natural setting, yet the focus remains firmly on the narrative interaction between the two lovers. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, relying instead on the balance of the figures and the atmospheric quality of the surrounding foliage. Blanchard's approach to colour and light creates a harmonious scene, typical of his efforts to bring the warmth of Italian painting to the French school. The composition is structured to draw the eye across the reclining form of Angelica, leading the viewer to the central action of the carving. It is a refined example of early seventeenth-century French Baroque art, capturing a quiet, private moment from a larger literary narrative.
