A detailed 16th-century engraving by Jan Collaert II depicting the classical myth of Andromeda.
This engraving depicts the classical myth of Andromeda, who is chained to a coastal cliff as a sacrifice to a sea monster. The composition follows the conventions of Northern Mannerism, a style prevalent in the late sixteenth century. Jan Collaert II, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates technical precision through his use of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figure and the rugged texture of the rock face.
The figure of Andromeda occupies the foreground, her body twisted in a classic contrapposto pose that emphasises the tension of her predicament. In the background, the hero Perseus approaches, sword raised, to confront the creature emerging from the water. The contrast between the static, bound figure and the dynamic, distant action creates a narrative rhythm typical of the period. The print reflects the influence of Philips Galle, whose name appears on the plate as the inventor and publisher of the work.
Collaert employs a refined line quality to render the atmospheric effects of the sea and the distant horizon. The work is a fine example of the printmaking traditions of the Low Countries, where mythological subjects were frequently produced for a sophisticated audience of collectors. The attention to anatomical detail and the dramatic lighting indicate a focus on the human form as a vehicle for emotional expression. This print provides a clear view of the technical standards maintained by the Antwerp workshops during this era, where collaboration between designers and engravers was common practice. The work remains an example of the period's interest in classical literature and the technical mastery of the copperplate medium.
