Domenicus van Tol, a nephew and pupil of Gerrit Dou, produced this portrait during the later years of the Dutch Golden Age. The subject wears a dark, formal coat with a lace collar and a sash, holding a baton that denotes his rank. His long, fair hair frames a face rendered with the precise brushwork characteristic of the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine painters, who prioritised smooth surfaces and meticulous detail.

In the background, the stone archway of the guildhall is visible, adorned with a relief sculpture depicting Saint George on horseback. This inclusion serves to identify the specific location and the martial association of the sitter.
