A classic woodcut illustration from William Nicholson's 1897 series, An Alphabet, featuring a jockey in a bold, minimalist graphic style.
This print originates from William Nicholson's 1897 publication, An Alphabet. The series consists of twenty-six woodcut illustrations, each representing a letter of the alphabet through a specific character or profession. Nicholson, working alongside his brother-in-law James Pryde under the pseudonym the Beggarstaff Brothers, developed a distinct visual language characterised by flat planes of colour and bold, simplified silhouettes. This approach drew inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and the poster art of the late nineteenth century.
In this specific plate, J for Jockey, Nicholson employs a restricted palette of black, white, and ochre. The composition is economical, focusing on the profile of the rider and the muscular form of the horse. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs attention to the essential shapes and the rhythmic lines of the figures. The typography is integrated into the design, maintaining the balance between text and image that defines the series. The woodcut technique provides a tactile quality to the print, with the grain of the wood occasionally visible in the printed areas, adding texture to the otherwise flat surfaces.
Nicholson's work for An Alphabet represents a shift toward graphic clarity in British illustration. His ability to convey character and motion through minimal visual information remains a notable aspect of his output. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic concerns of the period, where the influence of commercial poster design began to inform fine art practices. The work is a representative example of Nicholson's graphic style, which prioritised economy of form and a sophisticated use of negative space.
