A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Ippōsai Yoshifuji, depicting an American family as seen through the eyes of a 19th-century Japanese artist.
This woodblock print by Ippōsai Yoshifuji belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners with curiosity. These prints functioned as visual news reports for a public eager to understand the appearance and customs of visitors from the West.
The composition depicts an American family, rendered through the lens of Japanese artistic conventions. The father wears a wide-brimmed hat and carries a walking stick, while the mother carries a child on her back in a manner reminiscent of traditional Japanese child-rearing practices. A second child stands in the foreground, gesturing towards an unseen point of interest. The figures are arranged against a plain background, allowing the focus to remain on their attire and physical features. The artist employs a palette of muted tones, including ochre, deep blue, and forest green, which are characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the era.
Yoshifuji, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was known for his ability to capture the novelty of these encounters. The print includes the title in both Japanese and a phonetic transcription of the English word 'America', reflecting the linguistic exchange occurring at the time. The lines are clean and deliberate, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, yet the subject matter marks a departure from traditional themes of theatre or courtesans. This work provides a window into the cultural fascination with the 'other' during a period of rapid transition in Japanese history. It remains a document of the initial impressions formed by Japanese observers as they navigated the complexities of a changing world order.
