A detailed sixteenth-century portrait of a Peruvian envoy, rendered in watercolour and ink by the Flemish artist Lukas de Heere.
This work by the Flemish painter and writer Lukas de Heere depicts an envoy from Peru, sent to Rome in 1582. The figure is shown in a formal, frontal pose, wearing a distinctive feathered headdress and a cloak adorned with colourful plumage. A parrot rests upon his left hand, a detail that adds a specific exotic element to the composition. The Latin inscription at the base provides historical context, noting the mission of the delegation sent to Pope Gregory XIII.
De Heere was known for his interest in costume and ethnographic detail, a trait visible in the careful rendering of the subject's attire. The use of watercolour allows for a precise application of colour, particularly in the feathers and the patterned fabric of the tunic. The figure's expression is composed, and the overall treatment of the subject reflects the European fascination with the Americas during the late sixteenth century. The artist balances the formal requirements of a portrait with the descriptive needs of a historical record.
As a member of the Flemish school, de Heere often combined his artistic practice with literary pursuits. This image functions as both a portrait and a document of a specific diplomatic event. The clean lines and clear delineation of form are characteristic of his style, which prioritises clarity and observation. The work remains a curious example of how European artists interpreted figures from distant lands during the early modern period, relying on both direct observation and the conventions of the time to construct an image of the foreign visitor. The print captures the specific textures of the feathers and the folds of the fabric, demonstrating the technical skill of the artist in managing small-scale, detailed work.
