Beschreibung
Alston in Cumbria rises in pale houses and a slender church spire above blue river water, with dense leafy banks and white near flowers beneath soft clouds on a bright summer afternoon.
This North Pennine town stands around three hundred metres above sea level where the South Tyne meets the River Nent. Surrounding moorland contains rich mineral deposits. Mining for lead and other metals shaped the settlement, whose historic centre retains several listed buildings within a conservation area.
Alston has pale houses stepping up a green hillside towards a slender stone church spire. Slate roofs and tall chimneys form a broken line among dense leafy trees. Blue river water reflects the lower wooded bank, with white flowers beside the near grass. Soft cream clouds and long sunlit field strips suggest a bright summer afternoon below the surrounding uplands.
