A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Anthonie Waterloo depicting the mythological pursuit of Arethusa by the river god Alpheus within a dense forest.
Anthonie Waterloo was a Dutch painter and etcher known for his focus on wooded scenes. This etching depicts the Greek myth of Alpheus and Arethusa, where the river god Alpheus pursues the nymph Arethusa. While the mythological figures are present, the composition prioritises the dense, atmospheric forest setting. Waterloo uses a variety of etching techniques to differentiate the textures of the foliage, the rough bark of the trees, and the reflective surface of the water.
The work demonstrates the artist's ability to create depth through the layering of light and shadow. The foreground is dominated by a large, gnarled tree that frames the scene, drawing the eye toward the figures near the water. The middle ground recedes into a thicket of trees, while the background offers a glimpse of open space. Waterloo avoids the rigid, formal structures found in some contemporary works, opting instead for a more naturalistic representation of the Dutch countryside, even when populated by classical subjects.
Waterloo's prints were widely collected during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, valued for their technical precision and their evocative portrayal of nature. This piece is characteristic of his output, which often combined small-scale human or mythological activity with expansive, detailed woodland environments. The etching process allows for fine, delicate lines that capture the complexity of leaves and branches, creating a sense of movement and life within the static image. The contrast between the dark, shaded areas and the lighter, open spaces provides a sense of volume and atmosphere, typical of the period's interest in light and its effects on the natural world.
