A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting an allegorical scene of the Medici family, featuring portraits of Alessandro and Cosimo I de' Medici.
This engraving by Melchior Meier functions as a political allegory, celebrating the Medici dynasty and their consolidation of power within the region of Tuscany. The composition is structured around a central winged figure, representing the personification of the state or victory, who stands atop a lion. The lion, a traditional symbol of strength and authority, holds a shield bearing the Medici coat of arms.
Flanking the central figure are two circular medallions containing portraits of prominent Medici rulers. On the left, Alessandro de' Medici is depicted, while the right medallion features Cosimo I de' Medici. The wings of the central figure are inscribed with the names of various Tuscan cities, including Pisa, Pistoia, and Arezzo, which reinforces the territorial reach of the Medici influence. The inclusion of crowns held by the central figure further communicates the legitimacy and sovereign status of the family.
Meier employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking. The hatching and cross-hatching provide volume to the figures and depth to the background, which features a subtle, distant view of a cityscape. The heraldic elements, such as the crests positioned in the upper corners, are rendered with clarity, balancing the composition. This work provides a window into the visual language of power during the Italian Renaissance, where classical motifs and portraiture were combined to project political stability and historical continuity. The print is a fine example of how European artists, including those from the German tradition, engaged with the iconography of the Italian courts to produce works of political propaganda and historical record.
