A striking Mannerist allegory by Jacopo Ligozzi, depicting the moral consequences of greed through the presence of a skeletal figure looming over a woman clutching coins.
Jacopo Ligozzi, a Veronese artist who spent much of his career in Florence under the patronage of the Medici, produced this work as a moralising commentary on human greed. The painting depicts a woman seated in a state of melancholic contemplation, her hand resting against her cheek. She is draped in a golden-yellow gown, clutching a heavy sack of coins, which serves as the primary symbol of her vice.
Behind her, a skeletal figure with bat-like wings looms, holding a purse and gesturing towards the woman, representing the inevitable presence of death that accompanies the pursuit of material wealth. In the background, a smaller scene unfolds, showing a violent confrontation between two figures, further reinforcing the destructive nature of avarice. The composition is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Italian art, combining precise, naturalistic detail with a complex, symbolic narrative.
Ligozzi was known for his scientific accuracy in botanical and zoological studies, and this attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the pearls, the texture of the fabric, and the anatomical structure of the skeleton. The lighting is dramatic, casting the foreground figures into sharp relief against the darker, more ambiguous background. This piece invites the viewer to consider the transience of earthly possessions and the moral weight of human desire. It is a striking example of the period's fascination with memento mori themes, where the beauty of the execution contrasts with the grim reality of the subject matter.
