A 1818 Neoclassical ink and wash drawing by Charles Abraham Chasselat depicting an allegorical scene of justice and celestial guidance.
This drawing by Charles Abraham Chasselat, dated 1818, demonstrates the artist's command of the Neoclassical idiom. Chasselat was a pupil of Joseph-Benoît Suvée and maintained a career as a painter and illustrator in Paris. His work often reflects the formal rigour and moralising themes common to the period.
The composition presents a classical allegorical scene. A central winged figure, likely representing Time or a celestial guide, holds a staff and gestures towards a group of figures below. To the right, a female figure stands with a pair of scales, a traditional attribute of Justice. The figures are arranged in a theatrical manner, with the lower group reaching upward in supplication or recognition. The use of ink wash allows for subtle modelling of the forms and the creation of atmospheric clouds that surround the figures, grounding the scene in a celestial space.
Chasselat employs a precise, controlled line quality characteristic of the academic training of the early nineteenth century. The figures are rendered with anatomical clarity, and the drapery follows the fluid, rhythmic patterns favoured by Neoclassical draughtsmen. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the narrative interaction between the divine figures and the mortals. This work serves as a clear example of the period's interest in classical iconography to convey universal concepts of judgment and human experience. The drawing is executed with a delicate touch, where the wash provides depth without obscuring the underlying ink contours. It remains a representative piece of French academic drawing from the post-Napoleonic era, reflecting the stylistic preferences of the time for clarity, balance, and didactic subject matter.
