A detailed architectural drawing of a temporary monument erected for the 1795 Alliance Festival in Amsterdam, capturing the political symbolism of the Batavian Republic.
This watercolour and ink drawing depicts a temporary architectural structure erected for the Alliance Festival held on the Amstelveld in Amsterdam on 19 June 1795. The festival celebrated the alliance between the newly formed Batavian Republic and the French Republic following the collapse of the Dutch Republic and the flight of William V, Prince of Orange. The design features a central column adorned with garlands, topped by a liberty cap and flags representing the two nations. The base includes a relief panel showing allegorical figures, while the surrounding structure consists of a series of arches decorated with tricolour ribbons and foliage.
Such temporary monuments were common in the late eighteenth century for public celebrations and political demonstrations. They functioned as visual propaganda, communicating the values of the new revolutionary government to the populace. The drawing is executed with precision, reflecting the formal training of the period in architectural rendering and perspective. The use of soft washes of colour provides a clear sense of the intended materials and decorative elements, such as the laurel wreaths and the patriotic colour schemes.
This work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Batavian Revolution. It documents the ephemeral nature of public art during this period, where temporary constructions were used to transform urban spaces for political events. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, adhering to the Neoclassical aesthetic that dominated European design at the time. The inclusion of the liberty cap, a potent symbol of the French Revolution, further reinforces the political context of the commission. The drawing serves as a record of the specific design choices made for the Amstelveld celebration, capturing the intersection of civic architecture and political theatre in late eighteenth-century Amsterdam.
