A bold, geometric screenprint by Terry Frost, featuring a rhythmic grid of colourful, repeating arc motifs inspired by the architecture of the Alhambra.
Alhambra is a screenprint by the British artist Terry Frost, produced in the final years of his career. The work reflects his long-standing interest in the interplay of colour, geometry, and light. Frost, who spent significant time in St Ives, Cornwall, developed a visual language that often drew upon the rhythms of the natural world, yet this specific series engages with the architectural and decorative motifs found in the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain.
The composition is structured as a grid of rectangular colour blocks, each containing a repeating pattern of crescent shapes. These paired arcs, reminiscent of the letter X or stylised calligraphy, are arranged in a rhythmic sequence across the surface. The artist employs a high-chroma palette, using saturated tones of magenta, green, red, orange, yellow, and blue to create a sense of optical movement. The interaction between the background colours and the contrasting hues of the arcs generates a dynamic visual field, where the eye is encouraged to track the repetition across the print.
Frost was known for his ability to distil complex visual experiences into simplified, geometric forms. In this work, the rigid grid provides a framework for the more fluid, organic shapes of the arcs. The screenprinting process allows for flat, uniform areas of colour, which emphasises the graphic quality of the design. By stripping away representational detail, Frost focuses the viewer on the relationship between the individual elements and the whole. The work avoids narrative, instead prioritising the physical presence of the ink on paper and the balance of the geometric arrangement. It is a clear example of his late-period style, where he refined his approach to abstraction through the use of bold, primary and secondary colours.
