Beschreibung
A classic example of Seurat's pointillist technique, this work captures a field in St. Denis through a precise application of small, luminous colour dots.
Georges Seurat painted Alfalfa, St. Denis during the mid-1880s, a period when he refined his application of colour theory through the technique of pointillism. This work depicts a field on the outskirts of Paris, rendered through a dense accumulation of small, distinct dots of pigment. By placing contrasting colours side by side, Seurat intended for the viewer's eye to blend the hues optically, creating a luminosity that traditional mixing on the palette could not achieve.
The composition is divided into two primary zones: the foreground, dominated by the textured green and yellow tones of the alfalfa crop, and the distant horizon line, where the buildings of St. Denis appear as pale, simplified forms against a hazy sky. The horizon is low, which allows the viewer to focus on the rhythmic application of paint across the field. The light appears uniform, lacking the dramatic shadows often found in earlier academic painting. Instead, the surface possesses a shimmering quality, as if the air itself is vibrating above the vegetation.
Seurat was influenced by the scientific writings of Michel Eugène Chevreul regarding the law of simultaneous contrast of colours. In this painting, the artist applies these theories to a rural subject, moving away from the urban scenes that occupied much of his career. The lack of human presence or narrative action directs attention entirely to the optical experience of colour and light. The work remains a clear example of the systematic approach Seurat brought to his practice, where every mark on the canvas serves a specific purpose in the construction of the overall image. The surface is remarkably consistent, demonstrating the discipline required to maintain such a rigorous method across the entire expanse of the canvas.

Artist Biography
Georges Seurat
Seurat's most famous work, *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte*, exemplifies his revolutionary approach. Unveiled at the eighth (and final) Impressionist exhibition, its rigid, almost statuesque figures, built from countless tiny dots, caused a sensation. While some critics derided its perceived coldness and artificiality, others recognised the dawn of a new era. Seurat sought to bring scientific rigour to artistic expression, studying colour theory and optics to maximise the visual impact of his paintings.
Beyond *La Grande Jatte*, Seurat's oeuvre includes captivating seascapes, portraits, and scenes of Parisian nightlife, all rendered with his signature Pointillist technique. Works such as *Bathers at Asnières* and *The Circus* demonstrate his continued exploration of colour, light, and form. Though his career was brief, Georges Seurat's innovative approach to painting cemented his place as a pivotal figure in Post-Impressionism, influencing generations of artists to come.
