A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Willem de Haen depicting a formal oath-taking ceremony under divine witness.
This print by Willem de Haen depicts a formal scene of political and religious significance, titled 'Iuramentum Fidelitatis' (Oath of Fidelity). The composition centres on a group of men gathered within an architectural space, defined by classical columns featuring caryatids. The figures, dressed in early seventeenth-century Dutch attire, are shown in the act of swearing an oath. Their hands are raised or joined, indicating a collective commitment to a cause or authority. Above the central group, a radiant light emanates from a cloud, containing the Hebrew tetragrammaton, which signifies divine witness to the proceedings.
The style is characteristic of Dutch printmaking from the early seventeenth century, employing precise line work to delineate the textures of clothing, the architectural details, and the expressions of the participants. The use of caryatids at the left and right edges provides a structured frame, a common device in the period to lend a sense of gravity and classical order to historical or allegorical subjects. The scene reflects the political climate of the Netherlands during the period, where public oaths of loyalty were frequent occurrences in the context of the Dutch Revolt and the subsequent consolidation of the Republic.
De Haen demonstrates a clear command of perspective and figure grouping, ensuring that the narrative focus remains on the central interaction. The etching technique allows for subtle gradations of tone, particularly in the rendering of the light from above and the shadows within the hall. This work functions as a visual record of civic duty, capturing the intersection of secular governance and religious sanction. It is a fine example of the period's interest in documenting historical events through the medium of print, providing a window into the social and political rituals of the era.
