A detailed Flemish Baroque depiction of Aeneas and the Sibyl navigating the underworld, rendered with precise brushwork on copper.
This work depicts the classical narrative from Virgil's Aeneid, where the hero Aeneas is guided by the Cumaean Sibyl through the subterranean realms. Jan Brueghel the Younger, following the tradition established by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, populates the composition with a dense array of figures and infernal imagery. The scene is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features the protagonists, while the background recedes into a cavernous, fiery expanse filled with tormented souls, grotesque creatures, and architectural ruins.
The painting is executed on copper, a support favoured by the Brueghel family for its smooth surface, which allows for the application of fine, precise brushwork. This choice of medium contributes to the luminosity of the flames and the clarity of the small-scale figures scattered throughout the composition. The palette is dominated by dark, earthy tones, punctuated by the glowing oranges and yellows of the hellfire, creating a stark contrast that directs the eye across the complex narrative space.
Brueghel the Younger maintains the Flemish tradition of the 'hell scene', a genre that blends classical mythology with the fantastic, often macabre, visual language of Hieronymus Bosch. The composition is not merely a depiction of a literary event but a display of technical skill in managing a multitude of individual vignettes within a single frame. The figures of Aeneas and the Sibyl, positioned in the lower centre, provide a human scale against the vast, chaotic environment. The work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in moralising narratives and the fascination with the supernatural, presented through a highly structured and detailed artistic lens.
