A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jacob Matham, after a design by Abraham Bloemaert, depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds.
This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds, a subject frequently explored by Dutch printmakers of the early seventeenth century. Matham, a skilled engraver and draughtsman from Haarlem, worked after a design by Abraham Bloemaert, as indicated by the inscription at the base of the print. The composition follows the conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures, complex spatial arrangements, and a focus on dramatic light and shadow.
The scene is set within a rustic, ruined structure, providing a sense of architectural depth. The Virgin Mary kneels to the left, gesturing towards the infant Christ, who is surrounded by a group of shepherds. Their postures are varied, with some figures leaning in to observe the child, while others stand in contemplation. To the right, a figure seen from behind, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, anchors the foreground, guiding the viewer into the narrative space. A woman carrying a basket is positioned in the lower right corner, adding a domestic element to the sacred event. In the background, a small angel appears in the sky, a subtle detail that connects the earthly scene to the divine.
Matham employs fine, controlled lines to create texture and volume, particularly in the drapery of the garments and the weathered stone of the architecture. The cross-hatching techniques define the shadows, giving the figures a sculptural quality. The print demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Haarlem school of printmaking. By translating Bloemaert's design into the medium of engraving, Matham captures the expressive potential of the original composition, balancing the emotional weight of the subject with the formal rigour of the period.
