This work, completed in the final years of El Greco's life, represents the culmination of his unique stylistic development. Painted for his own funerary chapel in the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, the composition displays the elongated figures and dramatic, flickering light characteristic of his mature period. The scene depicts the nativity, yet it eschews traditional stable settings for a dark, cavernous space that focuses attention on the central light source: the infant Christ.

The figures are arranged in a tight, swirling formation around the child, their bodies twisted in expressions of awe and devotion. El Greco employs a palette of deep shadows contrasted with flashes of saturated colour, particularly in the garments of the Virgin and the shepherds. The brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising emotional intensity over anatomical precision. This technique creates a sense of spiritual agitation, typical of the artist's late works where physical reality dissolves into a visionary experience.

In the background, subtle details emerge from the gloom, such as the faint outline of a landscape and figures approaching in the distance. These elements provide a sense of depth without disrupting the claustrophobic, intimate nature of the main event.
