Beschreibung
A geometric study by Josef Albers, exploring the interaction of colour and form inspired by Mexican architecture.
Josef Albers produced the Adobe series during his tenure in the United States, following his move from the Bauhaus in Germany. These works draw inspiration from the architectural forms of Mexican adobe dwellings, which Albers observed during his frequent travels to Mexico. The composition relies on a series of nested, rectangular shapes that suggest the structural logic of a building facade, reduced to its most basic geometric components.
In this specific variant, Albers employs a precise arrangement of colour fields to manipulate the viewer's perception of depth and light. The interaction between the terracotta, pink, and blue tones creates a sense of spatial oscillation, where the forms appear to advance or recede depending on the surrounding hues. The grey borders provide a neutral frame, grounding the more saturated central elements. Albers applied the paint with a controlled, flat technique, removing visible brushstrokes to ensure the focus remains entirely on the chromatic relationships.
This work reflects the artist's systematic approach to colour theory, a subject he explored extensively in his later writing. By limiting his palette and using repetitive, modular forms, Albers forces an examination of how colours change when placed in proximity to one another. The work does not aim to represent a specific physical location, but rather to capture the atmospheric quality of light hitting a wall. The result is a study in balance and optical tension, characteristic of his mid-century output. The horizontal orientation and the specific layering of the rectangles evoke the rhythmic, stacked nature of traditional masonry, translated here into a language of pure abstraction.

Artist Biography
Josef Albers
He was born in 1888 in Bottrop, Westphalia, into a Roman Catholic craftsman's family. He worked as a schoolteacher for five years before deciding to study art, joining the Bauhaus as a student in 1920 and becoming a faculty member by 1922. He married Anni Fleischmann, a Bauhaus textile student, in 1925.
At Black Mountain, his students included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Ruth Asawa, and Ray Johnson. He left in 1950 to head the Department of Design at Yale, where he taught until retirement in 1958. The teaching produced Interaction of Color (1963), a text arguing that colour can only be understood in context, never in isolation. It remains a standard reference.
The Homage to the Square series occupied the rest of his life: nested squares of colour, painted obsessively, with every pigment and proportion meticulously recorded. The paintings look simple. The colour relationships within them are not. He died in 1976.
