A classic woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicting a kabuki actor in a dramatic pose, characteristic of the 19th-century Osaka yakusha-e tradition.
This woodblock print by Ryūsai Shigeharu depicts a kabuki actor in the role of Kimon no Kihei. Shigeharu, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmakers, focused his output on the theatrical world of the Kamigata region. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often produced idealised portraits, the Osaka school favoured a more direct, character-driven approach to the actor's likeness.
The composition is a close-up, focusing on the actor's facial expression and posture. The figure holds a sword, a common prop in kabuki dramas to signify conflict or dramatic tension. The actor's face is rendered with precise lines, capturing the exaggerated makeup and intense gaze typical of the aragoto style. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the actor's costume and the specific details of the performance. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted tones, which was characteristic of the Osaka print tradition during this period.
Shigeharu's work provides a record of the theatrical culture in early 19th-century Japan. These prints were often produced as souvenirs for theatre-goers, documenting specific performances and the popularity of individual actors. The technical execution shows the skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with the artist to produce these works. The print demonstrates the conventions of the genre, where the actor's identity is secondary to the persona they inhabit on stage. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print identifies the character and adds a graphic element to the overall design. This piece is a representative example of the yakusha-e tradition, documenting the intersection of popular entertainment and visual art in the Edo period.
