An early eighteenth-century ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting a kabuki actor dressed as a travelling merchant.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts a kabuki actor in the role of a travelling dry goods merchant. Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, active during the early eighteenth century, and is recognised for his contributions to the development of early ukiyo-e printmaking techniques. The work is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print, where black ink was thickened with glue to simulate the appearance of lacquer, often supplemented by hand-applied pigments.
The composition focuses on the figure of the peddler, who carries a large, rectangular wooden chest on his back. The chest is filled with various textile rolls and goods, rendered with clear, graphic lines. The actor wears a kimono decorated with architectural motifs, suggesting a connection to the urban environment of Edo. He holds a straw hat in his left hand, his posture suggesting movement as he walks. The artist employs a flat, two-dimensional approach to space, typical of the period, where the focus remains on the silhouette and the graphic quality of the costume patterns.
Textual elements are integrated into the design, appearing on the side of the merchant's chest and within the patterns of the kimono. These inscriptions identify the goods and provide context for the theatrical role being portrayed. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochre, muted red, and black ink, which creates a balanced visual effect. This print offers a view into the intersection of kabuki theatre and the daily life of Edo-period merchants, capturing a specific character type that would have been familiar to contemporary audiences. The line work is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the structure of the carrying case with clarity.
