Beschreibung
A moody, expressionist study of a Dutch windmill by Belgian artist Gustave de Smet, painted during his wartime exile in the Netherlands.
Gustave de Smet, a central figure in the development of Flemish Expressionism, produced this work during his period of exile in the Netherlands. Following the outbreak of the First World War, de Smet sought refuge in the Dutch region of Het Gooi. This environment provided a shift in his artistic output, moving away from his earlier luminist tendencies toward a more subjective, simplified approach to form and colour.
The composition features a windmill positioned against a heavy, atmospheric sky. De Smet employs a palette of muted blues, ochres, and earthy tones to convey the mood of the rural Dutch setting. The brushwork is deliberate and thick, reflecting the artist's interest in the physical quality of paint. Rather than seeking a precise topographical representation, the artist focuses on the structural essence of the scene. The windmill and the adjacent cottage are reduced to their fundamental shapes, anchored by a foreground that suggests a path leading into the distance.
During his time in the Netherlands, de Smet was exposed to the work of various international artists, which encouraged him to experiment with flattened perspectives and simplified volumes. This piece captures that transition, where the influence of early modernism begins to reshape his observation of the natural world. The sky, rendered with broad, sweeping strokes, dominates the upper portion of the canvas, creating a sense of weight that presses down upon the horizon. The work remains a clear example of his search for a personal visual language during a period of significant personal and historical displacement. It avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to communicate the character of the region through colour relationships and simplified geometry.
