A serene woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting daily life at Oji, featuring figures near a stream and a small vendor stall.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai captures a quiet moment at Oji, a location historically noted for its scenic beauty and proximity to Edo. The composition presents a slice of daily life, featuring figures engaged in routine activities near a small stream. To the left, two children play with baskets and nets, while in the centre, two women interact, one carrying a child on her back. A vendor sits to the right, attending to a small stall beneath the shade of pine trees.
Hokusai employs a restrained palette, typical of his earlier works before the widespread use of Prussian blue in his later series. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the kimono and the textures of the tree bark with clarity. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, relying on the placement of figures and the horizontal bands of the stream to suggest depth. This approach reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the focus remains on the observation of human activity within a specific environment.
The print demonstrates Hokusai's early interest in the depiction of common people in natural settings. Unlike his later, more dramatic compositions, this work maintains a sense of calm and domesticity. The inclusion of the pine trees provides a vertical anchor to the scene, balancing the horizontal movement of the figures across the foreground. The subtle application of colour allows the viewer to focus on the narrative details, such as the items on the vendor's table and the expressions of the figures. This piece offers an insight into the social fabric of the period, documenting the attire and customs of the time through a lens of careful observation.
