Beschreibung
A seventeenth-century Flemish landscape showing the Sterckshof manor house near Antwerp, featuring the artist and his family alongside peasants fishing.
David Teniers the Younger was a prolific Flemish painter known for his genre scenes and landscapes. This work depicts the Sterckshof, a manor house located near Antwerp. The composition features the brick manor house with its towers and stepped gables. It is situated behind a screen of trees and a moat.
In the foreground, a group of figures occupies the left bank. The man in the red cloak is often identified as Teniers himself. He stands with his wife Anna Brueghel and their son. A gardener approaches them with a gift of fish. To the right, several peasants are engaged in netting fish from the water. This juxtaposition of the landed gentry and the working class was a common theme in Teniers' work.
The sky occupies a large portion of the canvas. It is filled with soft, greyish clouds that suggest the damp atmosphere of the Low Countries. Teniers used a light touch to render the foliage and the reflections in the water. The palette is dominated by earthy browns and muted greens, alongside the pale blue of the sky. The red of the gentleman's cloak provides a single point of saturated colour that draws the eye to the figures.
Teniers became the court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the governor of the Spanish Netherlands. His style influenced many later landscape painters in Northern Europe. This painting is an example of the manor house genre, which depicted the estates of the wealthy bourgeoisie and nobility in the seventeenth century.
