A refined example of Heian period calligraphy, this fragment features fluid kana script attributed to the poet Fujiwara Akisuke.
This piece is a fragment from the Uzura-gire, a collection of calligraphic scrolls attributed to the poet and courtier Fujiwara Akisuke. The term Uzura-gire, or Quail Fragments, refers to the patterned paper used for these transcriptions, which often featured designs reminiscent of quail feathers. This specific work displays the kana script characteristic of the late Heian period, a time when Japanese aesthetics moved towards a more fluid and expressive style of writing.
The calligraphy demonstrates the mastery of brush control, with lines that vary in weight and speed. The ink flows across the paper in a rhythmic sequence, reflecting the emotional tone of the poem. The characters are connected in a continuous, cursive style known as sōsho, which prioritises the visual harmony of the entire composition over the legibility of individual characters. The paper itself has aged to a warm, neutral tone, providing a subtle backdrop for the dark, ink-brushed strokes.
Fujiwara Akisuke was a significant figure in the literary circles of his time, serving as the compiler of the Shikashū, an imperial anthology of poetry. His involvement in the preservation and creation of waka poetry informs the elegance found in this fragment. The work is not merely a record of text, but a visual performance of the poem's sentiment. The spacing and the tension between the ink and the negative space are deliberate, creating a sense of balance that is typical of high-quality Japanese calligraphy from the twelfth century. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the depth of the sumi ink, offering a view into the refined artistic practices of the Japanese court.
