Kobayashi Kiyochika was a significant figure in the transition of Japanese printmaking during the Meiji period. While he is often associated with his light-effect prints of Tokyo, his work in the kacho-ga genre, or bird-and-flower painting, demonstrates his technical skill and observation of nature. This print depicts two ducks standing at the edge of a water feature, with the silhouettes of lotus leaves and seed pods receding into a misty, grey background.
The composition relies on a contrast between the detailed, naturalistic rendering of the ducks and the simplified, atmospheric treatment of the environment. The male mallard, with its characteristic iridescent green head and brown chest, is positioned in the foreground, while the female stands slightly behind.
