Marianne North travelled extensively during the late nineteenth century, documenting flora in its natural habitat with scientific precision. This work depicts a mangrove swamp in Sarawak, Borneo, captured during her 1876 expedition. North worked primarily in oil, a choice that allowed her to record the specific textures and light conditions of tropical environments with greater durability than watercolour.
The composition focuses on the prop roots and glossy foliage characteristic of the mangrove ecosystem. North provides a clear view of the plant structure, including the distinctive seed pods hanging from the branches. The background recedes into the murky, shadowed depths of the swamp, where the tangled root systems create a complex network above the water line. Her approach avoids the romanticised tropes common to Victorian travel art, opting instead for a direct, observational method that prioritises botanical accuracy.
North donated her entire collection of over eight hundred paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a purpose-built gallery. Her work provides a visual record of plant species and habitats as they existed before significant modern environmental change. This print reproduces the original oil on board, maintaining the clarity of her brushwork and the specific colour palette of the Bornean wetlands. Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
