The adult lion occupies the upper portion of the print, peering down with a watchful gaze. Below, the cub clings to the rock, demonstrating the physical struggle inherent in the myth. Hiroshige employs a bold use of negative space, allowing the pale background to contrast with the dark, textured ink of the crags. The artist uses calligraphic brushwork to define the fur of the creatures and the sharp edges of the stone, demonstrating his mastery of the woodblock medium.
