A seventeenth-century Indian miniature painting depicting a lady and her attendant, from a manuscript of the Rasikapriya.
This miniature painting originates from a dispersed manuscript of the Rasikapriya, a sixteenth-century Hindi text by Keshavdas that classifies the various moods and types of lovers. Attributed to the artist Ibrahim, the work reflects the stylistic conventions of seventeenth-century Indian court painting, specifically the synthesis of Mughal naturalism and indigenous Rajput aesthetics.
The composition depicts a lady and her duenna, or female attendant, positioned before a pavilion. The figures are rendered with precise, delicate lines, characteristic of the period's manuscript illumination. The lady, dressed in traditional attire, receives a gesture of guidance or adjustment from the older woman. The architectural elements, including the domed roof and the crenellated wall, provide a structured backdrop for the interaction. The palette relies on earthy tones, contrasted by the bold red border that frames the scene, a common feature in manuscript pages of this era.
Above the scene, lines of Devanagari script are inscribed within a red panel, integrating the visual narrative with the poetic text. The treatment of the foliage and the soft, cloudy sky demonstrates the artist's attention to atmospheric detail, while the flat application of colour maintains the two-dimensional quality typical of the miniature tradition. This piece offers a glimpse into the courtly culture of the time, where literature and visual art were closely linked to explore themes of romance and social hierarchy. The preservation of the paper and the application of gold pigment suggest it was intended for a royal or aristocratic collection, serving as both a literary illustration and a decorative object.
