A detailed botanical study of Javan rhododendrons and white Ipomoea flowers, painted by the British explorer and artist Marianne North during her travels in the 1870s.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented global flora with scientific precision. This work depicts a Javan rhododendron alongside the white blooms of an Ipomoea, a genus of flowering plants in the morning glory family. North painted these subjects in situ during her extensive travels across the Indonesian archipelago in the 1870s. Her approach differed from many contemporaries, as she preferred to paint plants in their natural habitats rather than as isolated specimens against a plain background.
The composition balances the fiery orange clusters of the rhododendron against the cool, stark white of the Ipomoea. North utilised a clear, bright palette to capture the specific light conditions of the tropics. Her brushwork is controlled, allowing for the accurate rendering of leaf textures, from the waxy, lanceolate leaves of the rhododendron to the broader, veined foliage of the climbing vine. The background hints at a mountainous horizon, providing context for the elevation at which these species thrive.
North donated her collection of over 800 paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a gallery she commissioned herself. Her work serves as a record of botanical diversity during the nineteenth century. This print captures the clarity and observational rigour that defined her career. By focusing on the interaction between these two distinct species, North provides a glimpse into the ecological variety she encountered during her time in Java. The work is a direct observation of nature, devoid of the sentimental embellishments common in Victorian art, reflecting her dedication to accurate botanical documentation.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
