William H. Martin, a photographer based in Ottawa, Kansas, gained recognition during the early twentieth century for his humorous and often surreal postcards. This specific work, titled A good day for ducks in Kans., is a characteristic example of his approach to the tall tale postcard genre. By employing darkroom manipulation and composite printing techniques, Martin created exaggerated scenes that played upon the American fascination with frontier life and the abundance of the natural world.
The image depicts two hunters standing in a boat, surrounded by an improbable number of ducks. The composition relies on the juxtaposition of the two men in the foreground with a dense, layered arrangement of waterfowl, both on the water and in the sky. The technique involves cutting and pasting photographic elements to produce a scene that defies physical reality. This method was a common practice for Martin, who frequently produced images featuring oversized produce or impossible hunting hauls to amuse his audience.
Technically, the print shows the limitations and the ingenuity of early twentieth-century darkroom work. The edges of the pasted elements are visible, and the tonal range is typical of the gelatin silver process of the era. Rather than aiming for realistic documentation, Martin sought to create a visual joke.
