A refined woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai showing a woman preparing a mosquito net in a traditional interior setting.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a domestic scene from the Edo period. A young woman is shown in the act of suspending a mosquito net, a common summer task in traditional Japanese households. Her posture is elongated, a stylistic choice characteristic of Koryūsai, who was known for his refined depictions of women. The composition balances the verticality of the figure with the geometric forms of the room, including the folding screen decorated with pine motifs and the bamboo-slatted window.
Koryūsai, a former samurai who turned to printmaking, produced a large body of work during the 1770s and 1780s. His prints often focus on the daily lives of women, capturing quiet moments of activity. The colour palette remains muted, relying on soft ochres, pale greys, and subtle ink tones to define the space. A small cat sits near the base of the screen, adding a sense of stillness to the interior. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the nishiki-e process, where multiple woodblocks were used to apply different colours to the paper. The lines are delicate, tracing the folds of the woman's kimono and the structure of the canopy with clarity. This work provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the period, where the arrangement of interior elements was as important as the human subject. The inclusion of the birdcage and the screen suggests a setting of comfort and seclusion. Koryūsai's work remains a primary source for understanding the fashion and domestic habits of the urban classes in eighteenth-century Japan.
