A refined ukiyo-e hanging scroll by Torii Kiyonobu I, depicting a courtesan and her attendant with elegant, calligraphic line work.
Torii Kiyonobu I was a founder of the Torii school, a lineage that dominated the production of kabuki theatre signage and actor prints for generations. This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by a young attendant, a common subject within the ukiyo-e genre that explores the floating world of Edo-period urban culture. The composition relies on the characteristic line work of the early Torii style, which employs bold, sweeping strokes to define the figures against a neutral background.
The courtesan is dressed in an elaborate kimono featuring floral motifs, her posture suggesting a slow, deliberate movement. The child attendant, positioned slightly lower in the frame, provides a visual counterpoint to the adult figure. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, allowing the ink lines to dictate the form and rhythm of the drapery. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden tone, which complements the muted pigments used for the garments.
This work reflects the early development of ukiyo-e, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of figures rather than realistic perspective. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the folds of the kimono, demonstrates the technical precision associated with the Torii school. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the scroll integrates text and image, a standard practice in traditional Japanese painting. By capturing the elegance of the courtesan, Kiyonobu I provides a window into the aesthetic values of the Genroku era. This print offers a clear example of the transition from early hand-painted scrolls to the mass-produced woodblock prints that would later define the movement.
