A seventeenth-century Pahari miniature painting from the Rasamanjari series, depicting a scene of romantic estrangement with precise detail and bold colour.
This miniature painting originates from the Rasamanjari series, a seminal work of the Pahari school created by Devidasa of Nurpur. The Rasamanjari, or 'Bouquet of Delight', is a Sanskrit text by Bhanudatta that categorises the various types of lovers and their emotional states. This specific folio illustrates a scene of estrangement, where the tension between the figures is conveyed through their physical separation and distinct spatial zones.
The composition is divided into two primary areas. On the left, a woman sits within a pavilion, attended by a companion. Her posture and gaze suggest a state of contemplation or melancholy, typical of the Nayika, or heroine, in Indian poetic tradition. To the right, a male figure stands outside the architectural structure. He is dressed in the formal attire of a courtier, complete with a sword and turban. The stark division between the interior space of the pavilion and the exterior ground creates a clear narrative boundary, separating the two protagonists.
Devidasa employs a bold colour palette, dominated by deep reds, ochres, and muted blues. The architectural elements, such as the domes and the arched doorway, are rendered with precise, clean lines. The decorative patterns on the textiles and the wall borders demonstrate the meticulous attention to detail characteristic of the Nurpur workshop. The figures are depicted in profile, a standard convention in Indian miniature painting that allows for the clear expression of gesture and status. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle luminosity to the jewellery and decorative motifs, reflecting the high status of the subjects depicted. This work provides a window into the aesthetic and literary culture of the seventeenth-century Punjab Hills, where courtly life and classical Sanskrit literature intersected to produce highly refined visual narratives.
