Beschreibung

A precise study of a chestnut racehorse by George Stubbs, capturing the anatomical accuracy and calm dignity characteristic of his equine portraiture.

George Stubbs remains the pre-eminent figure in British animal painting, a reputation earned through his rigorous anatomical study and precise observation. This work depicts a chestnut racehorse in profile, positioned against a muted, open field. The animal is rendered with a focus on musculature and skeletal structure, reflecting the artist's own scientific research into equine biology. Stubbs often dissected specimens to understand the mechanics of movement and form, a practice that informs the clarity of the horse's silhouette here.

The composition is balanced, with the horse standing calmly beneath the boughs of a large tree on the left. The background features a soft, atmospheric sky and distant hills, providing a sense of scale without distracting from the primary subject. The horse's coat is painted with subtle gradations of brown, capturing the sheen of the animal's hide. A single white marking on the hind leg provides a point of visual contrast against the darker tones of the lower composition.

Stubbs was frequently commissioned by the landed gentry to document their prize animals. These paintings functioned as both status symbols and records of breeding. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured dramatic, action-oriented scenes, Stubbs often chose a quiet, observational approach. This stillness allows the viewer to appreciate the anatomical accuracy and the calm, dignified presence of the horse. The lighting is even and natural, avoiding theatricality in favour of a clear, objective representation. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine technical precision with a sensitive handling of paint, ensuring the horse appears as a living, breathing creature rather than a mere diagram. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, preserving the nuanced colour palette and the steady, measured gaze of the subject.

Artist Biography

George Stubbs

Stubbs painted a horse being attacked by a lion and it became the most reproduced image in eighteenth-century British art. He painted the subject at least seventeen times. He had never seen a lion attack a horse. He had seen a classical sculpture of the subject in Rome and decided it was worth repeating.

He was born in Liverpool, the son of a currier (a leather worker). He was largely self-taught. In his twenties he spent eighteen months in a farmhouse in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, dissecting horses. He suspended the carcasses from the ceiling using hooks and pulleys, peeled back the layers of skin and muscle, and drew every stage. The results were published as The Anatomy of the Horse (1766), one of the most accurate anatomical studies ever produced by an artist. The book established his reputation.

His horse portraits are commissioned works: wealthy landowners wanted their racehorses painted. Stubbs obliged, but his understanding of equine anatomy gave the paintings a presence that other sporting painters could not match. Whistlejacket, a life-size portrait of a chestnut stallion rearing against a plain background, is among the most striking animal paintings ever made. There is no landscape, no rider, no context. Just the horse.

He also painted dogs, exotic animals (a zebra, a rhinoceros, a moose), and rural scenes with labourers and haymakers. He experimented with enamel painting on ceramic tablets made by Josiah Wedgwood. He was elected to the Royal Academy but refused to submit a diploma piece, which meant he was never made a full Academician. He died in 1806, at eighty-one.
