Beschreibung
A detailed oil painting by Marianne North depicting the Australian outback during a bush fire, captured with the artist's characteristic observational precision.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented the flora and fauna of the world with scientific precision. This work depicts a bush fire in Queensland, capturing the atmospheric conditions of the Australian outback during the late nineteenth century. North travelled extensively between 1871 and 1885, producing over 800 oil paintings that now reside in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The composition focuses on the contrast between the immediate foreground and the distant, smoke-filled horizon. In the foreground, fallen timber and dry grasses are rendered with quick, descriptive brushwork. Two kangaroos appear as small figures, providing a sense of scale against the vast, burning horizon. The sky is filled with hazy, pink-tinged smoke, suggesting the heat and scale of the fire. North avoided the romanticised tropes of her contemporaries, preferring to record the environment as she observed it during her travels.
Her technique involved painting directly onto board, often while sitting in the field. This method allowed her to capture the specific light and colour of remote locations. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, muted purples, and the soft, hazy pinks of the sunset. This print offers a view into the historical documentation of the Australian environment, reflecting North's dedication to botanical and geographical record-keeping. The work remains a significant example of her ability to combine scientific observation with the medium of oil painting.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
