A refined woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō, depicting a courtesan with an uchiwa fan, characteristic of the Edo period bijin-ga genre.
This woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō depicts a courtesan, a subject central to the bijin-ga genre of the Edo period. Eishō, a student of Hosoda Eishi, produced works that focused on the refined elegance of women within the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. The subject is presented in a close-up, bust-length composition, which allows for a focus on the precise arrangement of her hair and the subtle expression on her face.
The figure wears an elaborate hairstyle adorned with multiple hairpins, a hallmark of high-ranking courtesans of the era. She holds an uchiwa fan, a common accessory in prints depicting summer scenes. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks for the kimono and muted tones for the background, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's features. The lines are clean and controlled, characteristic of the technical standards maintained by the master carvers and printers of the time.
Eishō was active during the late 18th century, a period when the depiction of beauties reached a high level of stylistic uniformity. His work often features elongated figures and graceful postures. This specific print belongs to a series titled 'Contest of Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters' (Kōchū bijin kurabe). The inclusion of cartouches containing text provides context regarding the specific establishment or individual represented, serving as a record of the social hierarchy within the pleasure districts. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate woodblock to achieve the final image. The composition remains balanced, avoiding excessive clutter while maintaining the decorative quality expected of ukiyo-e prints intended for a popular audience.
