Beschreibung
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, capturing a procession near the Shiba Shinmei Shrine and Zōjōji Temple.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, a collection produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The image depicts a procession of pilgrims or travellers moving past the Shiba Shinmei Shrine and the Zōjōji Temple, two significant religious sites in the capital of Edo, modern-day Tokyo.
Hiroshige employs a clear compositional structure, placing the figures in the foreground while the temple architecture and surrounding greenery occupy the middle ground. The use of a high horizon line allows for a detailed view of the shrine buildings, which are rendered with precise lines. The sky features a characteristic bokashi, or colour gradation, which transitions from a deep red at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon. This technique adds a sense of atmosphere to the scene.
The figures in the foreground are depicted with a focus on their attire, including the large straw hats that protect them from the elements. Their grouping suggests a narrative of movement, guiding the eye across the print. The colour palette is balanced, utilising muted greens for the foliage and earthy tones for the architecture, contrasted by the more saturated colours of the pilgrims' clothing. This work reflects the artist's interest in documenting the daily life and religious geography of Edo. It remains a primary source for understanding the urban environment of the mid-nineteenth century. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hiroshige to produce these images for a wide audience. The clarity of the composition and the attention to architectural detail are typical of the series, which sought to capture the changing face of the city through a variety of seasonal and weather conditions.
