A characteristic work by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, featuring his signature undulating lines, organic spirals, and integrated architectural forms in a palette of green, red, and blue.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser, born Friedrich Stowasser, was an Austrian artist known for his rejection of straight lines and his embrace of organic forms. This work, titled 738 Grass For Those Who Cry, displays his characteristic approach to colour and structure. The composition is dominated by undulating bands of green, which suggest a rolling terrain or a flowing river of vegetation. Within these waves, Hundertwasser places small, simplified architectural forms that resemble houses or shelters. These structures appear to float within the rhythmic, linear environment.
The right side of the canvas features a large, concentric spiral. This shape is a recurring motif in the artist's work, representing the cycle of life and the connection between the individual and the natural world. The use of high-contrast colours, particularly the bright reds and yellows against the deep greens and blues, creates a sense of movement across the surface. The paint application is varied, showing the artist's interest in texture and the physical presence of the medium.
Hundertwasser often used his art to express his ecological concerns and his belief in the harmony between human habitation and the environment. By avoiding rigid geometry, he sought to create spaces that felt more human and connected to the earth. This piece reflects his philosophy through its fluid lines and the integration of built structures into a naturalistic, albeit abstracted, setting. The title itself suggests a melancholic or reflective tone, inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between human emotion and the natural world. The work remains a clear example of his unique visual language, which prioritises intuition and organic growth over industrial precision.
