A 1912 lithograph by Alphonse Mucha commemorating the 6th Sokol Festival, featuring symbolic Slavic imagery and traditional Czech motifs.
This lithograph by Alphonse Mucha, created in 1912, commemorates the 6th Sokol Festival. The Sokol movement, a Czech gymnastics organisation, held great importance for national identity during the period of Austro-Hungarian rule. Mucha, a figure associated with the Art Nouveau style, employs his characteristic visual language to blend national symbolism with decorative elegance.
The composition features a central female figure, dressed in traditional Slavic attire, who holds a series of wreaths. Her crown and the staff she carries, which depicts the silhouette of Prague, reinforce the connection to Czech heritage. Behind her, a larger, ethereal figure emerges from the background, suggesting a guardian or personification of the nation. The colour palette relies on muted greens, deep reds, and soft creams, which creates a sense of historical gravity rather than modern commercial brightness.
Mucha uses thin, precise lines to define the contours of the figures and the decorative elements within the frame. The composition is ornamental, prioritising a balanced arrangement of symbolic objects over realistic depth. The arch at the top of the print, filled with stylised patterns, frames the scene and provides a sense of enclosure. This work demonstrates Mucha's ability to integrate complex national narratives into the accessible format of the poster. It avoids the typical commercial tropes of his earlier advertising work, focusing instead on the cultural aspirations of the Sokol movement. The print remains a record of the intersection between graphic design and political expression in early twentieth-century Bohemia.
