William Faithorne

William Faithorne began his career under the shadow of the English Civil War. He fought for the Royalist cause and was captured during the siege of Basing House in 1645. Following his imprisonment, he was exiled to France. In Paris, he studied with Robert Nanteuil, the premier portrait engraver of the age. This period of displacement allowed him to master French techniques that were previously unknown in London.

Portrait of William Faithorne

Biography

His technique involves a rigorous application of the burin to copper plates. Faithorne avoided the haphazard scratching seen in earlier English prints. He used systematic cross-hatching to define volume and light. This approach creates a sense of three-dimensional form in his portraits of figures like Prince Rupert and Charles I. His work is identified by its crisp lines and the absence of unnecessary decorative flourishes.

Modern collectors value these prints for their historical accuracy and formal restraint. The portraits provide a direct connection to the Restoration court. Their monochrome quality allows them to fit into various decorative schemes. They provide gravitas to a room. They are historical documents and examples of technical mastery.
