Martinus van Regteren Altena
Martinus van Regteren Altena was a member of the Amsterdam art circle before his early death at the age of forty-two. He spent significant time in Laren, a village that became an established colony for Dutch painters. While many artists of the Laren School focused on sentimental scenes, he studied the specific textures of local life. He was particularly interested in the Gooise klederdracht, the traditional costume worn by the women in the North Holland region.

Biography
His artistic approach favoured a muted palette and domestic stillness. In "Lezende vrouw in Gooise klederdracht", he captures a quiet moment of literacy rather than a staged peasant scene. His still life paintings, such as "Stilleven met wijnfles en knoflook", demonstrate a technical interest in the weight and surface of everyday objects. He avoided common tropes of the nineteenth century. Instead, he used direct light and honest observation to describe his subjects.
Modern collectors value the unpretentious quality of his compositions. His drawings of bridges and wooden railings show a structural clarity that feels contemporary. These pieces do not rely on narrative drama. They offer a sense of calm and order. The anatomical precision in his "Twee staande vrouwelijke naakten" appeals to those who appreciate the technical foundations of the Dutch tradition. His art provides a connection to historical movements without the clutter of Victorian genre painting.
