Johannes Philippus Lange
Johannes Philippus Lange was a draughtsman and lithographer whose career coincided with the growth of the Dutch middle class in the early nineteenth century. While many artists of his era focused on large-scale oil paintings, Lange worked primarily in the accessible medium of printmaking. He was frequently tasked with creating commemorative works, such as his 1838 piece marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of King Willem I’s reign. This focus on contemporary events allowed him to document the shifting social structures of the Netherlands before his death at age thirty-nine.

Biography
His approach to portraiture and genre scenes favoured a clear and linear style that translated well to lithography. In works like Girl at a Window and his portraits of figures such as Johannes Petrus Hasebroek, he used light to define form without relying on heavy ornamentation. His subjects often appear in moments of quiet contemplation or domestic routine. This directness is visible in his depictions of everyday life, including studies of unnamed men smoking pipes, where he recorded the physical features and dress of his contemporaries with technical precision.
Modern collectors value Lange for his ability to capture the atmosphere of the Dutch Biedermeier period. His prints provide a window into a time of domestic stability and private reflection. The simplicity of his compositions makes them suitable for contemporary interiors that require art with a sense of historical weight without excessive visual noise. Because his works were originally intended for wider distribution than unique paintings, they retain a graphic quality that remains legible and stylistically relevant in a modern home.
