Jacques Blanchard

Jacques Blanchard earned the nickname "the French Titian" during his short career. He spent two years in Venice studying the works of the great masters. This period changed his approach to light and skin tones. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on rigid lines, Blanchard prioritised the soft application of oil paint. He brought a Venetian warmth back to Paris that was previously absent from the local scene.

Biography

His work focuses on the human form through a lens of tenderness. In "Charity" and "Angelica and Medoro", he uses a palette of golden ochre and soft reds. He often painted secular and religious subjects with the same gentle touch. His figures possess a sculptural quality but remain fluid. This balance between structure and soft edges became his signature style. He avoided the harsh shadows common in Baroque art at the time.

Modern collectors value Blanchard for the calm atmosphere his paintings create. His compositions do not overwhelm a room. The muted tones and classical themes provide a sense of historical weight without feeling dated. Works like "Saint Sebastian Tended by Irene" offer a quiet narrative that fits well in contemporary interiors. His art provides a window into the transition of French painting toward a more lyrical aesthetic.
